free software alternatives

smellslikebot:

i never stop talking about some of these so i might as well banish them to a single post! you might know about a lot of them already, but feel free to look anyway

freeware can be a great opportunity to get a feel for something and learn a new skill. and in some cases, the free versions are almost as powerful, so you might find that you saved a lot of money but made work that was just about equal to what you might have done with paid software!

when you don’t do a warm up and go straight into lineart and your hand does the thing

image

Thats a sign of inflammation of the wrist called carpel tunnel . I had surgery because it got so bad I couldn’t draw anymore.

Yikes D8.

That’s why it’s so important to do stretches and draw with your whole arm (ok, arguably hard with a tablet versus a big gorgeous easel) and etc but I forgot today bc I am a moron and it was great

?????

people warm up to draw? like… how?

not an artists but climbing hand and lower arm exercises;

image
trying to find more and better diagrams for other stretches but yeah it’s super important if your gonna be using your arms a lot.

Adding this important video for all the artists out there, take care of your hands ♥

Everyone: Please dont draw at night, it makes your brain be active and youre not gonna be able to sleep! Plus, you need to rest, you work really hard on art everyday, you deserve a little break!

Do not allow your computer to install the Fall 2018 creators update (1709).

It breaks pen input with a new “feature” called pen scrolling. So basically, instead of actually drawing like I want it to, the pen now flings my canvas around for no damn reason. As far as I can see, this affects all tablets.

Thread on microsoft forums with M$ response.

There is no option to disable pen scrolling, and unfortunately I don’t have the option to uninstall the update. So basically, I’m fucked until microsoft adds an option to disable this garbage, or Adobe updates Photoshop to deal with this “feature”.

So again…

DO NOT UPDATE TO THE FALL CREATOR’S UPDATE (1709).

looks like there’s a possible registry fix for this issue. It can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/photoshop/comments/87y1ad/brush_tool_scrolls_canvas_instead_of_drawing/dx9bk8h/

Yeah I just fixed that problem with the “ PSUserConfig.txt “ thingy.
Easy to do and it really works. So for anyone else that got that problem, Also check this, because I did that too and now everything works again:

there are real reasons why doodles often get more notes than the drawings we spend far more time on.

paperbooart:

paperbooart:

as beginner and non-professional artists, we have flaws. these flaws become more noticeable the longer we spend on a piece and the more we flesh out the imperfections that we don’t know how to fix. the more effort you put into something, the more obvious it is where you need to improve. just consider the difference between drawing something like this (i’ll use my own art as an example)

image

and this.

image

as soon as i added lighting, a background, another character, etc, it became obvious where i rushed it. the lighting is sloppy, the lineart is wonky, etc. that’s why the first drawing got 300 notes and the second one got 50.

another reason why doodles are more popular is that doodles are fun to draw, and fun to look at. compare this

image

to this

image

the first one got 60 notes and the second one got 300. it’s because the second one shows more emotion, and because i wasn’t focused on making it look perfect, it’s more fun to look at. there are no distracting flaws or backgrounds - it’s simpler.

so, to summarize: doodles get more notes than finished pieces because

a. finished pieces from beginner artists are never perfect, and

b. art is often more pleasing to look at when the artist is not focused on perfection.

there are other reasons but i think these are generally the main ones.

i’m looking through my blog for stuff for my portfolio rn and i found this post and it’s still good

i hate this dude with a burning passion. its just the same girl all over again. hes some russian dude who lives in japan n everyone thinks this is dope but like its all the exact same piece. he makes a living out of this

image

this is what he makes per week. for drawing the same anime girl over and over again

image
image

yall really think this is dope

image

meanwhile artists who actually put effort and thought into their art and dont just draw barely legal looking anime girls struggle to get food :)

Why are you all so bitter all the time lmaooo

Y’all really hatin on a dude and insinuating that he’s drawing child porn just because he’s making a living doing what he loves??? Stay mad.

Here’s the funny shit: I used to follow this dude (only recently unfollowed cause my tastes have changed, no big deal) and as of what I know he’s NEVER drawn any sort of child porn so wtf is wrong with y’all?? Most of his patreon art pieces/processes are still available for FREE. If you bothered to look at any of his patrons rewards, you would know he draws 10+ pics for his 1$ patrons, which is HELLA cheap. His highest reward only costs 10$ PER MONTH, do you know how fucking CHEAP he’s selling his art for? I’ve been patron with people having rewards going up to $50-100.
So even if your beef is “he’s not good enough to make that sort of cash” then you’d know he isn’t even selling his art at that price range.

With some basic math you would know that, he probably doesn’t even have hafl of his followers pledging 5$ a month (this isn’t an attack, money is tight I get that)

Also here’s some of his recent rewards:

image

huh….doesn’t all look the same to me??? weird how looking at the ACTUAL timeline of an artist and not just googling them (which would just show their most popular work) changes things.

If you had any worthwhile presence in the art world, you would KNOW that the whole “soft girl” (whatever its called now) wave has been really popular so OF COURSE its getting the most traction.

If he’s so bad and you’re so bitter why not just do the same shit? Heads up though, he’s had an internet presence for at least 4 years. Best of luck!

Why everyone on Tumblr always so fuckin boiling mad when an artist is successful omg we get it, y'all insecure about your works, but don’t spit venom on inocent people.

I’ve seen this art before and man I never knew who it was because it went uncredited

Why artists and writers reblog their work multiple times:

konekat:

wyomingsmustache:

directium:

  • They posted it late at night and want people to see it in the daytime
  • They want others to reblog it
  • They want more attention for it
  • THEY WANT OTHERS TO REBLOG IT
  • They have followers in different timezones and want everyone to get a chance to see it
  • THEY WANT OTHERS TO REBLOG IT
  • IF THEY REBLOG IT MULTIPLE TIMES, THEY’RE DOING IT BECAUSE THEY WANT ATTENTION FOR IT AND THEY’RE LIKELY NOT GETTING ENOUGH, SO THEY KEEP REBLOGGING IT IN THE HOPES THEY’LL GET SOME
  • BE A COOL BRO AND REBLOG
  • THEY’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER

“Bro why you keep reblogging your own work bro”
“BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE IS”

The same reason movies play in theaters for longer than one night.

The same reason art exhibits last for days.

The same reason music isn’t listened to only once.

Reblogging for the last comment! 👍👍👍

100% this.

Quick note: Not reblogging this to say LOOK, YOU HAVEN’T REBLOGGED CREATORS’ CONTENT, YOU ARE GUILTY, LET ME GUILT TRIP YOU.

Everyone has their reasons to reblog/not reblog and no one should feel ashamed for that.

The reason I’m reblogging this is because it’s SO important for people to understand WHY creators reblog multiple times and to not get frustrated about it. They made something they’re proud of, and no one should be trying to make them feel ashamed of that.

Tumblr Dashboard Image Display Sizes (Updated July 13, 2015):

  • Photo Post: 540 by 810 pixels for dashboard view. Use 1280 by 1920 pixels for high-res version (except for superwide panoramas).
  • “Tall” Photo Post: Tumblr takes a 300-by-810-pixel version of your image then stretches it by 80% using HTML height and width attributes to make it 540 by 1458 pixels. Image quality may be diminished. Aim for uploading at least 710-by-1920-pixel images in case Tumblr switches to a better image size on the Dashboard. (It’s happened before.)
  • Photoset: 540-pixel width for one image in a photoset row. 268-pixel width for two images in a photoset row. 177-pixel width for three images in a photoset row. Gutters are 4 pixels.
  • Audio Post: 169 by 169 pixels for album art.
  • Link Post: 130 by 130 pixels for the thumbnail image grabbed by Tumblr from web link (if available).
  • Text Post: As of March 30, 2015, inline images can appear full-width (540 pixels wide). Any inline images that are 300 pixels wide or larger will display as full-width.
  • Avatar: 64-by-64-pixel icon next to posts.

How to post art without tumblr making it look like a blurry mess.
I can’t believe this is a website made for posting images sometimes.

one of the most reblogged comics i’ve ever made is on my tumblr with half of it blurry as shit and the other half not so pay attention to this stuff :/
